Back-Up Plan
My company has decided to open a 3rd field office in Minneapolis. Originally they only were going to open up 2 offices. 1 in St. Louis and 1 in Dallas where I was going to transfer. Since they just recently opened another office they are not yet sure how that is going to effect the hiring for the other 2 locations. So basically all the original plans I had and my company had are up in the air. Of course nothing could change and everything could move forward as originally planned. Or everything could change. So this has led to a back-up plan. If this offer in Dallas falls through Emily and I would still be moving our of state. However not to Dallas. We would make a move that we were thinking of doing about 3 years ago and heading out to Las Vegas. While home prices have increased there and we would clearly not be getting as much as we could in Dallas, it's the next logical move for us. So more details to follow when I get them. The bottom line is we are going to be moving, the location is just up in the air.

Screw Dallas! You're moving to Vegas. Now is an excellent time to buy in Vegas. There is a surplus of new houses and builders are throwing in all kinds of incentives for buyers. You are SO moving to Vegas! I'll start stocking up on Guinness.

I have actually been surprised by the home prices. I am looking to spend around $325,000 and have found some pretty nice places up where you guys live. I don't think the hard part is finding a house, it's finding a job and trying to time everything.

Jobs are easy to find. I can totally see you as a craps dealer. But seriously... I don't know what kind of insurance type jobs are available around here but I'm sure you can find something with your qualifications.

I'm going to have to pick up my NV insurance license. The positive aspect of a move to Vegas is the fact that we can go anytime we are ready. I actually am starting to like this idea better then a transfer to Dallas.

Me too! The best part is you don't have to live in Texas. BTW, have the flood waters receded yet? It would be a shame if you got to your new house and it was under water.

I'm more interested to know if they got the smell out of Harrah's yet?
I just talked to the Nevada Department of Insurance, and it turns out that all I have to do to get a NV license is get a letter of clearance stating I am in good standing with the California Department of Insurance. I thought I would have to go back into testing for the license, but it turns out all I have to do is ask for one. 1 problem solved.

I haven't been back to check the smell. When we left that night there was a roaring river flowing between Harrahs and the IP. The cabby had to take a detour. His Explorer wasn't certified for class 5 rapids.

When we took a cab from Harrah's to Excalibur the next morning at 11am, the river was still flowing. I blame the IP, that place needs to go.

Hopefully it washed away the dealertainers.

Be careful about buying a house in Vegas right now. I have heard some reports that prices have come down 30% in some areas and the decline could affect other parts of the city.
Prices of homes in California have already dropped 10 - 12% and might end up dropping 20% in the next year or two. If that happens, then prices in Vegas will drop 30% across the board.

I have no concern about the housing market. In fact I hope it continues to take a nose dive, it will only make things more affordable in Vegas.
Our house has lost about 5% of it's value. That's good considering it has more then doubled in value since we bought it. The bottom line is the timing is out of my control since my job is going away. I either buy a new home out of state or look for a new job in California and stay here. I don't plan on remaining stagnant and living in California anymore. I guess my point is the housing market has no effect on my decision to move. Any home I buy may lose some value at this point, but I don't plan on selling again for a long time. So it's of no consequence to me right now. It's still cheaper then living in California.

Prices are dropping pretty much everywhere. The only reason he should be concerned about the price of a Vegas house dropping is if he planned to sell it in the next couple years. As a long term investment, it's still good.
The most important thing you mentioned is that prices in CA might drop further. He should sell soon to get maximum return on his condo.
