Let the PR nightmare begin

I felt like banging my head against a wall when I saw this headline "Scientists trying to clone human embryos" about cloning for stem cell research.
It is technically accurate but not something the American public can grasp. I can already hear the outraged crys "BABY KILLERS!". Americans are totally ignorant of science and don't understand the difference between a fetus and an embryo.
Cloning embryos for stem cells is:
1) Take one unfertilized human egg
2) Remove parent DNA
3) Insert donor DNA
4) Let cell divide a few times
5) Viola! Stem cells
People will envision babies in test tubes and chaos will ensue. Those among the far right who do understand will take advantage of the situation and, instead of share the knowledge, fan the flames until there are petitions everywhere to ban all stem cell research.
I'm not, by any means, saying stories like this shouldn't be reported. What I'm saying is that reporters and news organizations should feel some responsibility to include some background information to help the ignorant public understand what they are talking about. This is pure sensationalism!
There is a lot of politics in science because of the need for funding. Investors and government grant agencies will feel pressure from the public and think twice about putting money into controversial projects and institutions. This will set stem cell research back for years.

You know, you're not keeping to the "90% mindless" as advertised. I think I may have to switch carriers!

Hey, I have held back on alot of things that I wanted to blog about but thought they would be controversial here. I think everybody who understands the issue will agree here.
