United Abominations

Megadeth's latest album seems to be getting a lot of critical praise. I have read several that comment to the effect of "United Abominations it Megadeth's best album since Rust in Peace". I haven't bought a Megadeth album since Youthanasia but I may have to break that streak. Anybody have it yet? If so, what do you think?

The new Megadeth album has been called the surprise album of the year by many people. I tried to get it when it came out this past Tuesday at Best Buy, but they didn't have it. I am going to make another attempt at some point this weekend.

The album features 2 songs the band played when I saw them open for Heaven & Hell a few weeks ago. Those songs are Sleepwalker & Washington Is Next. Great songs. If you go to Megadeth's website you can listen to one of them.

As for as Rust In Peace comparisons, we'll see about that. The 2 prior Megadeth albums have been compared to Rust In Peace and they aren't even close. I made the mistake of buying The World Needs A Hero. The Rust In Peace comparisons are mostly because of the political vibe that the new album has. I will say that this new album might be as good as Youthanasia. I'll let you know when I get it.

One other thing. One the new album they re-made A Tout Le Monde and called it Set Me Free. The song has female vocals and the guitar is a little different. It's almost like a jazzed up version of the old song.

By the way, not sure if you know, but Marty Friedman, Nick Menza, and Dave Ellefson are not in the band anymore. The other 3 members are good though. 2 of them are brothers.

Yeah, I heard that the only original member left is Dave. He did most of the writing anyway so I'm not that concerned. From everything I have heard, the new guys do an excellent job (drummer in particular).

The System Has Failed is actually a very strong album. I skiped buying The World Needs A Hero, but I will be getting this new one as soon as I can.

I've only heard the first 3 songs from TSHF. Perhaps I'll take my chances and buy that one too.

I didn't really listen to Megadeth for a few years but I got a little nostalgic for Youthanasia a while back and remembered what a great album it was. Now I feel the need to get back into Megadeth so I think I will get the new one. Dan, wanna burn me a copy of TSHF?

The band has taken the mp3 off of their site, probably because the new album is out. However, you can go to their My Space and check out the new songs. Another great new song is Gears of War. Make sure you listen to that one.

I also bought the album. I have listened to it twice. I'll post a formal review on my blog after I determine how good the album is.
