Poking Dan with a sharp stick!
Since you are a republican, I can guess your stance on global warming. Republicans sticking their fingers in their ears and shouting "BLAH BLAH BLAH I can't hear you!" isn't going to get us anywhere. If you want to adopt republican political ideology, that's your own business but science is my turf. The republican war on science will get us all killed if something isn't done. Ignoring everything that the brightest minds on our planet tell them (about global warming, evolution, depleted uranium, pollution, ecology, etc.) just because it doesn't fit their political, religious, or financial agenda is suicide! Yeah, I know, they found some crackpot "scientist" who tells us there is no need to worry about _________, but in every scenario, they have ignored the vast majority when it suited them.

Global warming is a reality. There is no denying that it is happening BUT there is also no proof that we have caused it. Climate change is a fact of nature and quite evident throughout earths history. It is entirely possible that global warming would be taking place whether humans were here or not. However, there is ample evidence that the byproducts of civilization (not the least of which being fossil fuel emissions) have the capacity to create or accelerate warming. The problem is, we can't afford to wait and see what happens. By the time we figure it out, it will be too late.

The good news is, there's a solution. Hydrogen! It's the most abundant element in the universe so we aren't going to run out any time soon. The only byproduct from burning it is.... water. It's cheap to process and very efficient. No more dependence on foreign powers, no more oil spills, no more destroying animal sanctuaries, no more price gouging, no more peak oil worries, no more global warming... all in one little atom. BMW makes cars that run on it. Germany has started building the infrastructure of H stations.

So many problems solved with such ease! But we have to start now. It will take time to build the infrastructure. It will take time for Americans to replace their current vehicles. Nobody is going to make the change over night. It's an expensive change but very doable if we start now and rebuild the system little by little. It's a change we have to make eventually even if you ignore global warming. So why haven't we started yet?

You can argue with what I have said if you want but I have the scientists of the world behind me. Who are you going to trust? Them... or politician?

Those same scientists of the world that are behind you, were also behind the big Global Cooling problem we had in the 70's. Go back and check Time magazine, see what the big headline was. What do we do about Global Cooling? It's going to kill us all! Wait, no one talks about that, because Global Warming is now the big thing. Hello, in another 30 years we are going to be scared of Global Cooling again. It's the whole sky is falling crap that I can't handle, we are not killing the earth. California contributes 1/10 of 1% of all pollution. We could all ride bicycles that shoot flowers out of the handle bars and it's not going to make any difference. Go outside, look up into the sky, that big sun out there is what's controlling our environment.
OK I do agree, the earth is warming, you got me, it has increased 0.3 to 0.6 degrees Celsius since 1850. Oh No!
Besides, that argument that scientists have ignored facts because it suited them works both ways. You can choose to believe the media hype and the scientists that agree with you, or you can choose to believe the scientists that side on the other side with you. Why are we so egotistical that whatever happens has to be the responsibility of humans. Anyone can believe what they want, but this is the same reason why I ignore people too. Anyway I thought this was supposed to be a mindless blog. Oh, I don't classify myself as a Republican, I look at any issue and decide for myself, not what the party believes in. You might be surprised how liberal I could get too. Any no I will not be checking back to see any responses, we might as well be talking about if there is a god or not. It never gets anywhere.

Well Dan may not check back but I feel compelled to answer his claims for those who might look.
1 - Time Magazine is NOT your best source for the scientific concensus. Peer reviewed scientific journals paint a different picture.
2 - Believe it or not, science has progressed a bit since the 70s.
3 - I'm not normally one to fall in with the catastrophists but this one is too large to ignore.
4 - The sun's output is pretty stable compared to historical climate change. Our atmosphere has more to do with it (the planet would mostly be covered in ice if it werent for our naturally occuring greenhouse gases).
5 - The global mean change has actually been .6'C + or - .2" since 1865 but most of which occured after 1920. Corresponds very nicely with the growth of industry and invention and proliferation of the automobile. You were close. That may not seem like much on paper but it takes very little to have major effects. Problem is, studies suggest we may already be committed to +.5-1.0' more based on what is already in the atmosphere. We wont feel the effects of our actions for years to come. That's why it is important to make changes now.
6 - Believing that we can't effect our planet is just sticking your head in the sand. There are far too many environmental indicators that scream otherwise.
7 - I'm glad you can think independently. I am liberal for the most part but have a couple censervative leanings too. I certainly wouldn't call myself a democrat.... they need some balls!
8 - Don't get me started on god! :P
