The stars at night, are big and bright....

(clap, clap, clap, clap) Deep in the heart of Texas.
So my company is giving everyone the shaft sometime next year and moving east. I have been doing some research for the past couple months and will likely move with them. Their new destination will be Dallas, TX. When I first heard about the move and the offer they gave the employees I laughed and said I would never move to Texas. Now after doing some investigating it seems like a good move for us. Aside from the fact that they will pay all our moving expenses and give me a $10,000 sign on bonus, we could easily afford a house out there ( a real house).
Looking in the town of Rockwall and Royse City I have been very impressed. They are about 25 to 30 miles east of Dallas. Emily and I could move into a 3,000 sq ft new home on 2 acres of land for $250,000. If I put $100,000 down from the equity in my place I could cut my mortgage from $1,600 to $800-$900 a month. Also our HOA dues of $200 a month with be cut to 0$ a month. That's a savings of $1,200 a month right off the bat. Not to mention the cost of living is substantially cheaper. So we would save $1,200 a month to move into a house that is more then double the size we have, plus land so our neighbors will not be living on top of us. I almost can't pass it up. I need some elbow space, I want to hit golf balls off my back lawn, and I'm tired of all this crowding.
I'm going to find out next week if the company will pay to have us fly out and look at property. It's still early to say, but I would peg our potential move close to the end of this year. There are still alot of details to work out so that estimate could change. Now the only bad thing about this is that it will now be a 16 hour drive to Vegas. This does not change the frequency of our Vegas trips. However, I guess we will have to fly.

When I read the beginning of this post the first thing that came to my mind was "Aaron, you are moving again?!!?" Then I noticed that it was Dan's post.

I don't blame you for wanting to take up this offer. Everything comes down to the bottom line and your monthly expenses vs. what you are getting in return.

Prior to buying the land in Chino Hills, I had considered moving to Dallas because I had been there twice in recent years and noticed how similar it was to Orange County. Also, my friend Raj was living with his parents at the time in a 5000 square foot custom home that he said would only go for about $500,000 if his parents sold it anytime soon. If I wanted to, I could go to Dallas right now and buy a house.

One of the reasons why I have not bought a condo here is because of HOA fees. I am not a fan of them at all unless they are willing to include electric and gas(or trash). I have only seen 1 condo complex that does that.

By the way, when you go to Dallas next week or whenever, make sure you go to Taco Cabana. It's a combination of Taco Bell and Baja Fresh.

Seriously? Texas???? As long as you continue to visit Vegas frequently. What about Benihana birthdays?

I'm giving a move to Dallas a 95% chance at this point.
As stated before this will not effect any frequency of Vegas trips.
Also, there is a Benihana in Dallas. I suppose we could teleconference.

At least there is plenty of time for me to give you reasons to NOT move to Texas. Here is just a couple off the top of my head:
- it's Texas
- tornados
- humidity
- bible belt
- rednecks
- poor science standards in K-12 education
- if you start saying Yall I'll kick you in the nuts

None of those arguments trump these:

$1,200 a month extra income/$14,400 a year
Owning a real home on real land
Ample separation from neighbors and people as a whole

Humidity is not as bad as it would be closer to the Gulf
Tornados rarely strike that area of Texas, we are on the outskirts of "Tornado Alley"
Rednecks and Bible Thumpers can be contained by distancing yourself, which you can do with enough land
Sometimes I deserve a good kick in the nuts anyway

I know those weren't the most compelling arguments but give me time. I'll come up with more. I can't really argue the money factor.

Just to put my 2 cents in, I was in Dallas for about 5 days in both June 2003 and June 2004. The heat and humidity weren't that bad. It's tolerable. Besides, money factors almost always outweigh any negatives.

The only bad thing about moving out of California is that you wont make any money from the house or land that you have in the state you move to. You will live comfortably though.

That's one of the reasons why I decided a long time ago that I won't be moving out of the state. If you make the right real estate investments you can get rich in a hurry. Also, in recessionary times you can buy a house here and keep it until the market goes up again and double your money. It might take 10 years, but it's worth it imo
