Possible softball career-ending injury
My short softball career has be plagued by injuries from the beginning. I don't seem to be able to play (or even practice for that matter) without hurting myself in some way. Pulled muscles, scraped knees, and sunburns from hell just come naturally to me but those heal quickly. This week, however, I really outdid myself.
After hitting the ball during my first at bat of the evening, I started to sprint for first base. As I took my first step I felt an explosion of pain in my calf. It felt like an impact as if I had been struck by the bat though I didn't understand how it or anything else in the area could hit me with such force.
Turns out the sensation of being hit by something is normal when you tear a muscle in your calf. Muscle fibers snap back with force when they separate from the achilles tendon in a fashion similar to a rubber band breaking under tension. I have a solid grade 2 strain which means I didn't completely rupture it (grade 3 = surgery) but tore a sufficient amount of muscle fiber to have me limping for a few weeks. I'm going to see how it goes but this will almost certainly take me out for the season. Grade 2 strains can easily turn into grade 3 if athletic activity is resumed too soon. Typical recovery time is at least 4-6 weeks.
I said "career-ending" in the title because I doubt I will be asked to return next season. My performance has improved steadily since day one and I was finally starting to feel like I was getting the hang of it. I'm still horrible but I expected to show at least some competence by the end of the season. Now that my season has been cut short, I will only be remembered for my poor performances in the first three weeks. Most of my teammates have been playing for 20 years and some of them take it very seriously. Without the opportunity to prove myself in the final four weeks, I fear certain factions within the team will vote against extending my contract. I never would have joined in the first place if I had known how competitive they are. I was expecting a beer league where everybody is just there to have a good time. I just wish I hadn't invested money in equipment I may never use again.

Well at least you now have a good excuse to never play again. In fact you should probably never run again, I'm sure you look ridiculous.

You had so much potential. You were a rising star that fell due to injury. All of us will be wondering what might have been had you stayed healthy :-)
